I have been trying (mainly as an experiment, but because I later want to
connect to a remote machine) setting up a VNC connection between two
computers on a wired local network.

Vine Server (on a Powerbook) and Chicken of the VNC (on an Intel
machine), both running Tiger, were the server and client.

I don't seem to be able to make a connection, either from Chicken to
Vine Server, or by a reverse connection from Vine Server with Chicken
listening in.

Chicken can see the Powerbook in its list of servers.

I thought it might be a firewall issue, so turned off the firewall on
both machines, but to no effect.

The logs show,

on the client machine

Chicken is running in Little Endian

while on the machine running Vine Server the log says

Vine server is running in Big Endian

Error connecting to reverse host
error resolving reverse host; Bad hints

Any suggestions on how to get it working?

Yes, it's Intel architecture

Yes, it's PPC architecture

Are you using IP addresses or host names to connect?

If you intend to connect to a remote machine, you need to think about
security from the start. Have a look at
<http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.comm/msg/756729059283f877>

I've found it more reliable to specify the port number in the "Host" box
(e.g. remote:5900) and leave the "Display" box empty.

Other than that, VNC is pretty straightforward.

IP address.

Currently, just checking on my local system so security is not
significant.

As you may recall, I worked out an easy way to get SSH working and a
reverse connection so that the person running the remote server doesn't
have to owrry about port forwarding, etc.

But I need to get things working locally before I try suggesting a
remote connection.

At present my friend is unable to print, and we've tried many
possibilities over the phone. It got me thinking of a VNC session again,
though this can be too slow.

Thanks for the reply to my query about screen sharing in Leopard, by the
way. If there is no security that does make it much less useful than I
had hoped (anyway, my friend probably won't be changing to Leopard,
though I will in due course.)

I have had some odd behavior with Leopard's firewall. Sometimes CoVNC
won't connect and I disable the firewall and all's good. Then I
re-enable the firewall and all's still good. I haven't found a pattern
yet, but I'm still looking.

Meanwhile, something's strange with my DynDNS mapping. I can't seem to
locate my host using it's assigned name. I've made lots of changes
since moving to Leopard and must have stepped on something. *sigh*

I'm really not sure about the security of screen sharing. My
observation was based on the fact that it was initiated using AIM
clients and I assumed (yeah, I know) that the data streams were being
passed unencrypted. I could be wrong (it wouldn't be the first time).

You're using DynDNS Updater? You have the latest version? That works
fine for me in Leopard.

Both the application and widget report the proper name/address
association, but I can't find my host using the DynDNS name form a
network outside my one. It used to work and I've obviously stepped on
something.

Maybe I've just confused some DNS cache and It'll all sort itself out in
a few hours.
