For some reason the 'add message to this thread' no longer shows up in
the previous thread.
I just wanted to say thanks to Mark and also sorry that I didn't get
back sooner- I was
travelling.
But it's working!
When I did this:
«answer the serialPorts» Internal Modem was one of the options.
and when I did this
«set the dialingPort to <internal modem>»
it worked immediately with the Phone Dialer stack.
But the phone dialer in my address book (button >script) was opening
the Phone stack
which didn't work. I changed it to Phone Dialer and voila!
I can't thank you enough because on the road I'm using phone cards to
call home. There's
often a LOT of numbers to dial- connection #, pin # and then the
number I want to connect
to. By placing commas between the numbers I can time it right. Real
time saver.
Thanks Again!
John

Hi John and all HyperCard fans reading this newsgroup,

I'm glad I could help and I'm even more glad that you're still
using HyperCard. In fact, it is amazing how many people tell me
they are using HyperCard to run their business. Last week, I got
a panic mail from a person who was trying to port a stack to a
different database because it was getting slow --he had several
10s of thousands of cards in a dozen of stacks and thought
HyperCard couldn't handle it. It turned out that his antivirus
program was the culprit. Now, he plans to use HyperCard for many
more years!

Sorry for diverting from the original subject Smile

Mark

Hi Mark,
I find Hypercard fascinating, and there's something about it
that resonates with my desire to learn entry level coding,
but the fact that it's no longer supported- won't even run
on OSX? (I'm still running 9)- discourages me from jumping
into these books I have here.
I did some tutorials for AppleScript- and will get back to that
at sometime, but in the meantime I seem to have decide Flash
and ActionScript might be the way for me to go.

Anyway...
Now that Address is calling Phone Dialer to use the internal
modem to make the calls, I've run into another problem and
I wonder if you might have an idea.
It all works fine up to about 41 characters (numbers, spaces
and commas) but then it stops dialing. The DialingTime seems
to be long enough- and the entire number is visible in the
dialing field when it's dialing.
Any ideas on why it would quit before finishing dialing the
entire number?
Thanks Again,
John

PS- A long time ago we talked about a script that would turn
an address stack into a vcard. Did you have any more ideas on that?

Hi John,

I can think of a cause of the problem right now. Perhaps you
post the script with a fake phone number. There might be a
syntax error in the modem string you are using, for example.

I can understand that you're reluctant to learn HyperTalk now,
but there are two packages using a very similar language,
SuperCard and Revolution. I hope that we will see a third one
within a year, namely what is currently known as the Sphere
project. Since you have HyperCard already, it might be worth it
to learn HyperTalk now and use the language with other tools,
later. On the other hand, I must admit that the possibility of
learning e.g. Java becomes more and more attractive to me.

Harry, who probably also reads this, and I both worked on a way
to convert vCards. We exchanged some materials, which I could
send to you. Whenever I have time, I will look at it myself
again, but there is a long waiting list.

Best,

Mark
