My most recent game played would be -- still -- Victoria, where
I'm playing Brazil (a mighty safe country) and trying to get the hang of
building an industrial economy. The shortage of raw materials like the
machine tools is a handicap, and of population, is a nagging problem,
though. I may give a try through a semi-industrialized country like the
US, except they get so many special events like that pesky Civil War it's
hard to focus just on the economic play.

I've been spending quite a bit of time playing a little game called Pax
Galaxia. It's basically your typical Master-of-Orionish space strategy
game, condensed down to its essence. You can play a full game in ten
minutes but it still has a lot of possibilities for deep strategy. It
plays great online, but the computer AI is fantastically good as well. And
the best part is that you can get the whole experience through and
finished quickly, so it's a great diversion even when you don't have a big
chunk of free time to devote.

I've given up ALL my games (including a paid-for, downloaded version of
X2 which looks brilliant but is as yet unplayed).
Why?
Because I came across a simulation called Second Life.
A wonderful combination of text messaging and a fully comprehensive,
3-D, walkthrough graphic environment with photographic-quality avatar
rendering. Multiplayer by definition.
Go to https://secondlife.com/
and try the free trial. After that its a one-off payment of $9.95.
Really. If you like it, and get involved, it'll change your life!
Byee!

I may have to look this up. I love a good conquer the universe
game, but the number of games where you can do that and not spend a few
months per project is sadly limited.

Oh, I've heard of it -- actually, I believe at the moment about
two-thirds of my Internet friends are playing it -- but I've held out
so far against it.

I've gotten stuck on this one level -- competing for the
harvesting for titanium against another colony -- and I think I'd like
it rather more if there weren't so many of the distracting invasions of
space chickens or whatever they are. There're little quirks of the
interface that are getting to me, but I'm not finished with the game
yet. I think the sandbox mode is more appealing for this game than it
is for most other games I have.
