Because of the Time Machine taking so much time just to prepare
backup, i haven't been able to backup my computer recently. Is there a
way to shorten the time?

Why not? Are you doing something that prevents it from finishing?

> Is there a way to shorten the time?

I think the *initial* backup takes the longest, since it has to back
*everything* up. But after that, it should go much faster.

The only way you might shorten the amount of time it takes would be to
delete a large portion of the data being backed up - which would kind of
defeat the purpose, admittedly. ; )

To be remembered is that Time Machine backups are in effect incremental, and
once a file has been backed up it won't be backed up again until it has
changed.

My initial Time Machine backup took about four hours but my hourly backups
rarely take more than a minute.

If it's speed you want, nothing is faster than Apple Software Restore.
It no longer has a GUI in OS X, but it's still there. Open a terminal
session and man asr for details.

Does ASR do incremental backups or does it just copy everything over
whether or not its been modified since the last backup?

It works on disk volumes, so no, it can't do incremental backups,
it copies everything.

You know that you can continue working while it's backing up, right ?
It's deliberately designed to use the barest minimum of CPU and disk time
(which is why it takes so long to do the initial run). I've been playing
3D games and never noticed the drop in frame rate. Just leave it running
in the background while you're doing stuff.

How does one do EXCLUDEs in Time Machine? I haven't seen anything in
Time Machine's Prefs that permitted one to do EXCLUDEs.

Eh? That's about the only thing that is in the TM prefs... other than
the selection of what disk to backup to an dthe on/off switch. Open the
TM prefs panel. It has the big on/off switch, and the 2 other clivkable
things are "change disk" and "options". You want "options", which brings
up a panel of things labelled "Do not back up". Use the "+" to add
things to the list.

Time Machine only backs up changed files. So if you want it to take
less time, let it back up more often.

How does it avoid inconsistencies if a program is updating multiple files
and TM just catches one but not the other(s)?

I've taken to creating a small bootable volume on the external drive. I
boot into it and use SuperDuper to backup from my notebook's HD to another
volume on the external drive. Both source and destination are inactive,
so there can be no inconsistencies.
