Post subject: still looking for info re: ichat through ssh tunnel

I'm still unable to get iChat 4.0 (601) to work though a tunneled ssh
connection, and still wondering if anyone can either confirm the
problem, or conversely, provide a counter-example where it works.

Problem summary:

I have an ssh connection open with a local port forwarded to a jabber
server on the other end. I can connect to this remote server with
Adium by configuring the account to use server 'localhost' or
'127.0.0.1'. In 10.4 this used to work in iChat as well, but in
Leopard it fails:

iChat was unable to login to 127.0.0.1 because your
screen name or password was incorrect

Needless to say, I've verified the name and password _many_ times, and
I know them to be correct.

I can use Adium for this account if necessary. But since I prefer the
new iChat overall and I use it for all my other chat accounts, I'd
rather use it for this one as well.

I'm running 10.5.1 with all security updates.

Following up my own post here, since no one else seems to want to...

I've posted this query a few times in the past couple of months, so
far without results. Is it really possible that not a single reader
of c.s.m.system has tried this? Not one person here is using jabber
through an ssh tunnel with iChat in Leopard? Nobody at all?

Personally, I use Adium, which has built-in OTR encryption, so there is
no need to do it manualy. IMO, with the one exception of video chat,
Adium is better than iChat in every way:

OTR isn't relevant here. The issue is that the jabber server is
behind a firewall, and the only way I can contact it is via an ssh
tunnel through a 'gateway' host (ie one that's accessible both inside
and outside the firewall).

That's a _huge_ exception, and it's no longer the only one. Document
sharing and screen sharing are others.

As I mentioned in all of my other posts on this subject, I used to use
Adium in 10.4, and I still use it in 10.5 for this specific jabber
connection, since I can't figure out what's going wrong with iChat in
this special case. I like Adium, but for my needs, aside from this
unusual case, it's been superseded by iChat in 10.5 in the same way
that, say, Virtue Desktops has been superseded by Spaces.

I just need to figure what's going on with the ssh tunnel. My guess
is that one of the new security features in Leopard is getting in the
way. But I'm still not positive it isn't a configuration error on my
part. That's why I continue to seek followups from anyone who's
either done this successfully with iChat in 10.5, or conversely, run
into the same problem.
