OTR isn't relevant here. The issue is that the jabber server is
behind a firewall, and the only way I can contact it is via an ssh
tunnel through a 'gateway' host (ie one that's accessible both inside
and outside the firewall).

That's a _huge_ exception, and it's no longer the only one. Document
sharing and screen sharing are others.
As I mentioned in all of my other posts on this subject, I used to use
Adium in 10.4, and I still use it in 10.5 for this specific jabber
connection, since I can't figure out what's going wrong with iChat in
this special case. I like Adium, but for my needs, aside from this
unusual case, it's been superseded by iChat in 10.5 in the same way
that, say, Virtue Desktops has been superseded by Spaces.
I just need to figure what's going on with the ssh tunnel. My guess
is that one of the new security features in Leopard is getting in the
way. But I'm still not positive it isn't a configuration error on my
part. That's why I continue to seek followups from anyone who's
either done this successfully with iChat in 10.5, or conversely, run
into the same problem.
