I just bought an iMac for my son and I am a bit confused by iChat.
* Does iChat allow people on different services to send each other
messages? That is, if he is logged in to an AIM account, can he IM
with a friend who is on google talk?
* I can log him on with AIM, but if I try logging him in with his
google talk account, I get a "cannot connect to server" error. I
assume this is due to some sort of firewall or proxy issue (we are
using dd-wrt on our router and he is connecting via a dansguardian
proxy server)
* Anything else I should know? Is it really necessary for him to have
a .Mac account for things to work nicely?
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: ichat questions |

No. An AIM account can communicate with other AIM accounts. And AFAIK
the same holds true for all the other chat services. AIM, and some
other applications, let you access multiple services. But they (also
AFAIK) do not let you connect them in any way. iChat is a distinct
client for each service.

It's not a firewall or proxy issue, it's simply that AIM is AIM and
Google is Google and they don't interact. iChat doesn't know how to
talk to Google, Yahoo, MSN or any others. When iChat came out there
were rumors that support for additional services but it hasn't come to
pass.

No.
iChat is a chat client for AIM, .Mac and Bonjour (for local network
iChat users using no server).
I wish there was some way to chat between services but, for now, the
service providers don't seem to consider that in their best interests so
they don't.
Your only solution at this point is for one or both of you to get an
account on the "other" service.
I have AIM and Yahoo accounts. Most of my chatting is on AIM, I signed
up for it much earlier and because most people I chat with are on it.

No, he needs a Google talk account to do that.

Possibly; with Leopard (10.5) this should just work if you go through
iChat's account-setup system. You might check out Google's iChat help
at
<http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=24076&query=icha
t&topic=&type=>. It's a little out of date but possibly useful.

You don't need a .Mac account to use any of iChat's features.

I took from his post that he has the accounts, just can't figure out how
to log into them with iChat. As you correctly point out, he can't
OP, you might try an app called Adium (http://www.adiumx.com/). It has
the ability to use several services at the same time. >> Stay informed about: ichat questions |

Google Talk yes. See the following instructions:

No, you do not need .Mac

You might also try Adium
<http://www.adiumx.com/>
which can connect to most IM services, however it is restricted to
text and does not do audio or video.
I use Adium at work where I use AIM, my company's Jabber server,
and Google Talk, but do not have any need for audio or video at
work (and the corporate firewall would block it anyway ). >> Stay informed about: ichat questions |

May I bring that to a logical conclusion for you?
"...the servicer providers don't seem to consider that in their best
interests so they don't. And they don't give a rat's knobby little
kneecaps about users' interests."

The current version indicates it does Google Talk and Jabber too and
gives setup parameters for those also.

The OP also wants to communicate from AIM to Google which he can't.
