Sounds like you are running VPC 2004 or VPC 2007 for Windows and not Mac.
If that is the case then VPC for Windows does NOT do USB.
What I did under Windows was take my VPC 2007 Windows 2000 disk image and
import it into the free VMWare Player for Windows. Then USB will work.
With the free player they do not give you the Windows Device Drivers for
video, networking, or sound but I got those drivers from the free VMWare
Server product. It's a pain and not as stable as I would like but at least
I can sync my smart phones (Palm and Windows Mobile) to a virtual machine.
