Ok so I might be the dummy here, I can take that, dole out the ctdowns
but please tell me. I have looked at roughly a million f%@$ing
tutorials and the best anyone seems to have is I think you might....
with no information. I'll start out by saying the apache and php files
are apparently in the library in a webserver folder. Since I don't
have a back up drive or any means of backing up prior to screwing
around in the terminal, I'm reluctant to. Either way can anyone out
there tell me with confidence exactly what I need to do? If its
downloading something, whatever, I'm an illustrator who's suddenly
become the "it guy" so now as I'm trying to construct a simple
database I've got no clue what the hell I'm supposed to do. PLEASE
HELP!!! >> Stay informed about: How the hell do I run mysql and php in leopard???? |

First off thanx. I can't say figuring out all of this stuff is easy,
I've been reading non-stop for about three days now, and I'm just now
starting to get a piece of the big picture. I finally found a tutorial
as to how to activate php, but I'm surmising from this that I"ll have
to download the mysql, and it seems like all of these sites are still
referring to 10.4. either way, with my hosting I have phpmyadmin and
mysql, but the host doesn't allow mysql remote connection, so for my
new sign up's I"m going to be left spending ever how many hours trying
to manually edit the databases. Not appealing, so my attempt was to
create a temporary local host, to house the database, until I can find
somewhere else to stick it. Never the less, My real search now is for
a program to run mysql files, any suggestions as to what I should find
to do this. I'm trying to complete a Dreamweaver tutorial now that
makes me wish I wouldn't have read the last long SQL definitions and
explanations, as apparently dreamweaver does much of the query work
for me, that is if I had the program to read/run the mysql files found
in the tutorial, even mysql.com seems to only have something for os x
10.4, which I don't want to even think about trying based upon some of
the things I've come across in my recent reading. Sorry, I realize
that question was rather cryptically embedded in that last sentance,
do I need a program to run mysql files?? or is it preinstalled,
everyone seems to think it is and has an opinion, but without actually
providing me with the answers I need as to how to turn it on, anyway
thanks again, and any/ all help is appreciated. >> Stay informed about: How the hell do I run mysql and php in leopard???? |

I mean I have done a bit in flash and 3ds max over the years and I can
generally pick up the bare necisities from turorials, but I'm just
trying to set up an in-house comment form, a sign up form, and maybe a
little more functionality, I plan to do most of it in dreamweaver, so
it shouldn't be tooo challenging, just really hit a dry spot in avail
info at this point, anything you can offer is mad appreciated >> Stay informed about: How the hell do I run mysql and php in leopard???? |

Do you have any programming experience? If not, I wouldn't use
PHP/mysql. I'd use FileMaker or this new thing called Bento they
(FileMaker) have, or something equally easy. And that's not a put-down -
I'd use it myself in such a case. What simple database is needed, anyway?
I have some notes (at home I think) for getting PHP/apache/mysql to play
together. You can have these if I can find them, but without some
programming background you'll be stuck after that. >> Stay informed about: How the hell do I run mysql and php in leopard???? |

wow ur helpful, something like a link on how to partition a drive, or
the fees ability of such an action on the mac would be to hard, well
dole it out I suppose, I mean of course everyone else was born with
such knowledge, or more realistically when they finally got out of
windows grapple hold after months of bitching at it's inefficiency's
everyone has time to read all the manuals >> Stay informed about: How the hell do I run mysql and php in leopard???? |

To everyone who might stumble across this in the future it's really
very simple, here's what you do, first enable your root password, get
textwrangler, go into file open hidden, browse for /etc/apache2/
httpd.conf when you open the file scroll down to
#LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so
the # indicating that the line is commanded out so without altering
anything else in the http.conf file remove the # sign
LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so
then save the file
now your php is active
for the mysql, there is no mysql for jaguar, but the version for tiger
will work, all you'll have to do is goto http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html#downloads
and select whether or not you want the binary, I used the package, but
after using it, you might have to point to your mysql. Either way I'm
no tutorial writer, check out the link below, or some of the other
links listed in this posting and see what you can figure out, if it
weren't for a few select specifications I need for my database, I
would be very inclined to follow micheals advice and just use an easy
to use program.
I found most all of this at http://www.procata.com/blog/archives/2007/10/28/working-with-php-5-in-...-os-x-1
although I had started the process on another page I think that pretty
much everything I mention here can be found in more detail there >> Stay informed about: How the hell do I run mysql and php in leopard???? |

Everyone but you, that is. ; D
Apparently you have no time for spelling & grammar classes either - a
shame. ; )

No, DO NOT enable the root account. Not only is there no need to do so,
doing so will make your Mac more vulnerable to malware attacks.

Or just edit the file with vim, pico, or any other command-line text
editor, like most administrators do.

If your web server is reachable from the public internet, be very wary
of keeping apache and php both up to date, as there are well-known and
popular exploits that will allow attackers to gain administraative
access to your Mac. Combine such a successful attack with enabling root,
and you've just been rooted.

Of course there is. What ever gave you that impression?

I've only had a drive fail twice, and both times I had a recent backup.
I'd really recommend it. It will happen eventually, or you'll
accidentally delete something, or whatever.

I will second the previous poster's suggestion re: FileMaker. If you've
already thought out what fields you will need and what relationships
need to exist to support applications like this, you can probably be up
and running with most or all of these apps in a day - maybe even a few
hours if the requirements aren't too extensive. I've used FM ever since
version 1 for a host of small-to-medium jobs and have been
well-satisfied with the results. Yes, you CAN use the heavy hitter dbs
like mysql, etc. but if you aren't a REALLY experienced db programmer,
there is no comparison in productivity between FM and the more
traditional SQL dbs. In fact, you might even find that one or more of
the example FM apps included in the package can be easily modified to do
exactly what you need.
