Am snatching myself bald... cannot find a way to convert some corel draw
images (.cdr suffix) to something that my G4 iMac sys 10.2.8 can read. (I
have tried Graphic Converter 5.8.1 and it will not recognize the files.)
Any insight you can provide is appreciated.

Tom-

Checking Corel's web site, it isn't clear whether Draw is still supported
on the Mac. Have you called them?

There is/was a program called MacLinkPlus that could translate between
various formats. I think the company was Dataviz. It is possible they
can convert Corel Draw files.

The best scenario would be if you can still run Corel Draw, perhaps in
Classic mode. If Corel has a Save-As capability for a format you can use,
you would do well to take advantage of it while you can. If none of its
choices do you any good, you might select-all of the drawing contents,
copy and paste into Classic Scrapbook, or directly into a newer document
in the desired format.

One program I've had to use as an OS X host for old "draw" files, is the
Draw mode of AppleWorks. Its main shortcoming is it only allows a
one-page drawing, but is better than nothing. Copy-and-paste is the best
method I've found to transfer documents from old to new formats.

Apple's iWork Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint also have a crude Draw
capability. You might check them to see if they can import your Corel
documents. Otherwise you have to fight the result of pasting-in a foreign
Draw document. Don't Ungroup unless you have to!

first, thanks for your speedy reply and thanks for your effort

I did not call them, but in examining their website, I could not get a copy
of Corel Draw for the Mac. Google searches were also fruitless in this
pursuit.

I will check this out. Thanks. Again, several variations on a Google search
did not mention MacLink Plus. I will investigate, anyway.

I do not have a copy of Corel Draw, but will see if I can get a copy of it
that runs in the Classic mode, and see what happens.

I tried Appleworks, and the files just bounced right off. I could certainly
try again.

I may be able to investigate this path

I have friends in low places, who might be of help, but I try to save that
option for last.

MacLink Plus will not translate Corel files.

To the best of my knowledge (as a prepress profession for the last 25
years) to deal with .cdr files you need Corel Draw. Nothing else will
do.

That's your only option at this point, AFAIK.

oh, jeepers! well, that explains the trouble I've had, finding something that
works. There's a Windows user I'm friendly with, maybe I can get that person
to open those files up, and then save them to another format.
Thanks.

That would be the path I'd take.

Converting pict.jpg to jfif.jpg - have some JPEG-compressed PICT files. When I upload them to my Web site, browsers won't display them. Apparently, PICT is poorly supported. I'd like to put them on the Web without recompressing them. Is there a way to do that?

Converting a 24-bit color to an 8-bit grayscale - This is another point where no matter what I do, I feel as dumb as dirt... Graphics on the Mac is certainly not my strong suit, and the client's app is OS8.5.1, using MacApp. As always, any pointers greatly appreciated. The challenge: Convert a color..

Images from a movie - I've got an MPG movie, that I need to edit, image by image. To do this, I need to pull the images out of the movie, and into my image editor. I'm on a Macintosh. For some reason, I can't access the images. If I open the movie and play it, and stop....

watermark your images - Hi all, how do you water-mark your images? Is there any comparison how well this operation works? - how well is it visible without being anoying - how well is it burned in or can be removed by filters, softening etc. - how about invisible..

Animated Images - Is there an application, aside from Photoshop and a plug-in, that lets you create animated images, like for banner ad advertising? Thanks
