Post subject: compatibility problem Word for PC and Word 2004 for Mac
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office>word (more info?)

I received a file (by e-mail) written in Czech language and I can open
this
with my PC (Word 2000)
If I copy this file to my Mac (Powerbook G4) and open the file with
Word
2004 for Mac, all the special characters are wrong.
I also have the same problem with other languages like Russian,
Hungarian, ...
How can I solve this problem so I can read the files with my Mac? Are
there
any language settings I have to change or is it something else?

Tx for any help on this one Smile

It's most likely a font issue. Not all fonts - regardless of name - are
created equal. Take a look in Word>Preferences> Compatibility to see if font
substitution has been used. Come back with what you find.

Hiya I got notice about this post as my native language is that in question,
but CyberTaz has actually answered it.
I would guess the same font issue. Select the whole document and set it to
Times new roman CE, Is it Ok now?
Some fonts, that exists on PC does not exist in that particular location on
Mac, so either you can see empty squares instead these characters or these
characters might be substituted by the appropriate character but from
different font.
So first try to change font to something that exists on both platforms PC
and Macs such as times new roman. If that does not help, can I have the file
to see what's going on.

If I look to font Substitution, I get a popup that says " no font
substitution is necessary, all fonts used in this document are
available"

In the future, please post in a new thread rather than asking unrelated
questions in an existing thread.

You can use the Edit menu, or the keyboard commands cmd-c (copy), cmd-v
(paste) and cmd-z (undo).

You can also use View | Customize Toolbars to drag the Copy Paste and
Undo commands onto the toolbar. More info:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/CustomizeToolbars.html

When you "copy" from a web page you're actually copying more than you think
- exactly what depends on the Browser you're using as well as other
variables. So...

When you get back into Word don't simply paste. If you do you're letting
Word decide what is to be pasted from the clipboard and it will typically
choose the text content instead of the graphic content... After all, it *is*
a _word_ processor:-) Instead use Edit> Paste Special - Picture & see if you
don't get better results.

Sorry: You haven't given enough information for me to be able to answer.

All you can do is try again.

If you still have problems, start a new thread. This thread is about a Word
2004 problem.

Cheers
