This is a post in response to a thread I started over a month ago. I
thought I would let you all know that I did the necessary thing and
bought a Macbook.

Setting up was pretty straightforward - as soon as I had it booted up
and set up a user account I was up and running on the wireless. The
Macbook was running Leopard out of the box, but there was already a
software upgrade available to 10.5.1 so that was downloaded and
installed (along with a couple of other updates).

Got firefox running pretty quickly with my usual customizations.

Installed Open Office for Mac. It runs like a dog compared to my
Linux and Window$ PCs. Might look into the MAc port of OO (I've
forgotten its name). There were some concerns over using it in
Leopard though....

I haven't been able to make a Voip SIP client work yet. I know that X-
lite have a MAC version, but it seems to have become broken with
10.5 Sad

One thing that caused me a headache was the keyboard. Often there
would be a few letters missing from any given sentence. I may not be
the fastest typist in the world, but I knew there was a problem. I've
had no issues with this on any of the PCs I have used, laptops or
desktops. In the end I returned it to the Apple dealer. They didn't
believe me that there was a problem (don't you hate intermittent
issues?). In the end I asked the girl at the service desk to enter 10
letter n's in TextEdit. She typed them in and only 7 appeared. She
did it again, 9 appeared. Then again, 6 appeared. She agreed there
was a problem! So a new keyboard was installed for me. I returned to
the store an hour later, tested it and walked away happy again -
although somewhat bothered by the fact that the most expensive laptop
I have ever purchased was experiencing such issues.

My Lotus Notes client is working fine so I am having no problems
connecting to the server from inside or via WAN.

I am reasonably happy with the performance. It is definitely faster
than Vista, its just a shame I had to pay more than double for a Vista
laptop of the same spec.

Hi Rob,

There is another alternative you might take for your
word processing, if you get around to it later.

You could use the included "Boot Camp" feature
of Leopard to set up a Windows partition on
your MacBook, then use any Windows word processor
that you prefer.

For example, in my case, I run a Windows speech app'
named "Dragon NaturallySpeaking" on my MacBook,
and I can't tell any difference in the speed of operation
as compared to running Dragon on my ASUS (PC) laptop.

Let's see now--are the specs really the same?

How well does a Vista laptop run Mac OS?

Right. And does the Vista laptop come with iLife applications, a
built-in high-quality web camera / microphone, and so on?

Is it Java? There seem to still be 'issues' with Java on mac, according
to many people. At least it doesn't slow everything to a crawl and then
do a kernel panic any more!

I dabbled with jabber etc stuff for a while. Reminded me of linux and I
eventually gave up and used skype.

If this was CSMA I'd ask you what laptop that is, but I wont!

OpenOffice runs under X11.

I recommend Macs to my friends, and Windows machines
to those whom I don't mind billing by the hour

NeoOffice. I think it runs "native" on a Mac, rather than requiring X11.

Have you tried

System Preferences
Keyboard & Mouse

and adjusting the various times?

Haven't finished your whole note yet, or read any more of the thread,
and even worse I'm on tiger, not leopard, but Gizmo Project works very
well on all my machines, some of which are quite ancient (pismo
powerbook, for example, g3, 500 mhz, 1999-2000 vintage), although it can
take quite while to finish starting up on the old slow boxes.
