This is a post in response to a thread I started over a month ago. I
thought I would let you all know that I did the necessary thing and
bought a Macbook.
Setting up was pretty straightforward - as soon as I had it booted up
and set up a user account I was up and running on the wireless. The
Macbook was running Leopard out of the box, but there was already a
software upgrade available to 10.5.1 so that was downloaded and
installed (along with a couple of other updates).
Got firefox running pretty quickly with my usual customizations.
Installed Open Office for Mac. It runs like a dog compared to my
Linux and Window$ PCs. Might look into the MAc port of OO (I've
forgotten its name). There were some concerns over using it in
Leopard though....
I haven't been able to make a Voip SIP client work yet. I know that X-
lite have a MAC version, but it seems to have become broken with
10.5
One thing that caused me a headache was the keyboard. Often there
would be a few letters missing from any given sentence. I may not be
the fastest typist in the world, but I knew there was a problem. I've
had no issues with this on any of the PCs I have used, laptops or
desktops. In the end I returned it to the Apple dealer. They didn't
believe me that there was a problem (don't you hate intermittent
issues?). In the end I asked the girl at the service desk to enter 10
letter n's in TextEdit. She typed them in and only 7 appeared. She
did it again, 9 appeared. Then again, 6 appeared. She agreed there
was a problem! So a new keyboard was installed for me. I returned to
the store an hour later, tested it and walked away happy again -
although somewhat bothered by the fact that the most expensive laptop
I have ever purchased was experiencing such issues.
My Lotus Notes client is working fine so I am having no problems
connecting to the server from inside or via WAN.
I am reasonably happy with the performance. It is definitely faster
than Vista, its just a shame I had to pay more than double for a Vista
laptop of the same spec.
