I have Virtual PC 7.0.3 on my iMac G5 (PPC) running OS X 10.4.11, and I run
Windows XP Professional within VPC.
I have a language CD that I used to run on a Windows PC which needs Windows
95, 98 or NT 4.0. I uninstalled it from the old PC some time ago when I sold
it, and have recently tried to install it on this version of XP but without
success.
Can I install Windows 98 SE on my VPC in addition to XP? As far as I can
see, I do this by Selecting File - New, Create New PC, and Install your own
Operating System. If so, could anyone advise me on the best place to buy a
second-hand copy? I am a bit hesitant about buying such software on eBay
since I can't be sure it is legit, and cannot find such an old OS anywhere
else. I am in the UK.
The other choice I have is that I have a dying laptop with Windows 98SE on
it. Could I transfer that, perhaps via a USB stick? (There's no CD drive on
the laptop so it was not installed via a CD.)

I don't see a supported Win98 solution for you on the G5 and Tiger X.4.
Win98 is supported on Parallels, but you need an Intel Mac to run
Parallels.
VPC 6 supports Windows 98, but it doesn't run on the G5 and probably
won't run on Tiger.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827904
Of course you could always give VPC7 & Win98 a try, the FAQ below says
there may be some limitations.
A good VPC7 FAQ:

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Yes, I can see now by reading those
particular links that I can't run Windows 98 on VPC 7, and I can't install an
earlier version of VPC on the G5. Up the creek without the proverbial
paddle, in other words!
I will go off and ponder another solution - but thanks for putting me
straight.

Windows 98 should run. It isn't supported but that just means help from MS,
not whether or not it will run. There are many Win98SE offerings on eBay.
Don't buy an upgrade edition. You won't be able to install it without an
earlier version to upgrade. Buy what's called a full edition.

Virtual Machine Additions install and run fine for me with Windows 98 under
VPC 7.03 on my G5 10.4.11. VPC 6 obviously will not run on a G5 but Win98
and the Additions do under VPC 7.
If you don't care to get VPC there are cheaper or Free products out there
but VPC is the most polished and offers the best performance.

eBay uk is your source since Win98 was withdrawn from store shelves over
five years ago. You cannot order the way you can XP. Just check the
feedback rating for the seller before buying.

Unfortunately the original message had a bit that was snipped by
someone else before you replied. It said:
I am a bit hesitant about buying such software on eBay since
I can't be sure it is legit, and cannot find such an old OS
anywhere else. I am in the UK.
Any good PC repair centre should still have copies of Windows 98 (for
re-install purposes), but they may not be able to legally sell it to
anyone.
BUT,
the original person may not need Windows 98 at all. There is the
occasional piece of software that doesn't like Windows XP, but many can
be "persuaded" to run.
I haven't tried it on anything myself, but you could try the following
process to coax the "language CD" into working with XP.
1. Insert game CD and close the autoplay window when it pops up.
2. Use Windows Explorer to expand the CD and find the install icon.
3. Right-click on the installation icon (Setup.exe) and select
Properties.
4. Click on the "Compatibility" tab at the top of your new Properties
window.
5. Check the box and select "Windows 98/Me" from the pull-down menu.
6. Install the software like you normally would.
7. Once installed, repeat from step 3...only this time use Windows
Explorer to search for the software launch icon and change the
compatibility there, too.

Thanks for that advice. I will give it a go, but will try Helpful Harry's

Thanks for that, Harry, will give it another go since when I tried to install
it before I didn't check or change any Compatibility settings! That would be
the simplest solution.

I have seen some copies on eBay, but find it difficult to tell if they are
full copies or upgrades - some of the descriptions are on the vague side!

The seller of a full edition will usually say so clearly since it is a
selling point. The vague ones are usually OEM or upgrade editions.

For your software to run in Windows XP, try this:
Go to Virtual PC in the Menu bar and select 'Preferences'. Go to
'Script Menu' and install it.
Now, in the Menu bar at the top fo the screen, click on the Scripts
icon, point to 'Virtual PC Scripts' and then 'Toubleshooting' and then
click on 'Toggle Compatibility Mode' and you will be asked if you want
to enable Compatibility Mode. Say 'Yes' and try running your software. >> Stay informed about: Windows 98 on Virtual PC |
