Post subject: Virtual PC installation problems
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>virtualpc (more info?)

I have been trying to install Virtual PC so I can run Windows XP
Professional (I need to run a few PC based programs for work). After
the install, I get an error that says something like "Virtual Switch
Networking failed to load, Code: A1004". When I try to contintue the
installation, everything works OK until the black screen opens that
says "OS not found. Install an OS on this hard drive." I insert my
Windows XP Professional CD and nothing happens. According to the
installation guide, Virtual PC is supposed to "capture" the disc. I
tried to capture it manually by selecting "Capture Disc" under the
"Drives" menu. Has anyone had this problem before or know how to fix
it? I've tried reinstalling Virtual PC from several different discs,
and on different machines, but always run into the same problem.
Thanks in advance for the help!!
PS- I use an iBook G4 with Mac OSX 10.5.1

This is just a guess based on some of my experience.

My VPC version came with XP Home on it. I recently wiped my disk
and installed a new OS (Tiger). I then imported all of my data
files from backup including the VM data that I had been using
previously.

The issue that I ran into was that the VPC install makes that
assumption (False in my case) that you want to immediately create
a VM data file. There doesn't seem to be a place in the installer
where you can just quit after VPC is installed. So basically, I
just had to abort the installation when it got to the point that
it started to create a VM and install all of the OS for me (a
long process I didn't need). This worked as the VPC *application*
was already installed.

Then I can just start VPC, select the old VM I had and run it.

In your case, when the VPC app is installed, you can basically
quit the install. Then go and start up VPC and create a new VM.
An empty VM is Basically a PC with no software on it. Capture
your XP Pro install CD and RESTART the VM (i.e., *NOT* VPC) That
essentially is like rebooting the PC with your CD installed.

Again, I've not done this, but it makes sense since you are not
installing XP Pro in VPC, you are installing it in your VM.

Hope this helps

First of all OSX 10.5 (Leopard) the optical drive (CD/DVD) no longer works
in VPC. You need to make an ISO of your XP CD and then from in VPC select
Capture Disk Image. Then VPC will install XP.

To make an ISO or Disk Image of your XP CD go into
Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and use that to create a disk image of
the CD.
