Using 10.4.11 Mail. Often when I review older email (months old) I get
this message in italics:
"The message from Me concerning ³Subject line of message²
has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account
online in order to download it."
Of course the message has vanished. I'm presuming its got something to
do with the email being cleared out on the mail server after having been
deleted. The odd thing is why isn't it still where I last left it?

I don't use mail, but it sounds similar to what happens in thunderbird.

in Mail's preferences, go to Accounts and then the tab 'Advanced'. If
you have 'remove from server after retrieving' selected, and have told
it to prompt you before downloading over a certain size then it might
get deleted form the server at some point, without having downloaded the
whole message. In thunderbird, if I move a message to another folder
this happens too, as it treats it as no longer in the inbox.

As I said, I'm not too familiar with mail, but it sounds like that's
where the problem will be, in some form.

Don't use POP servers for mail that you care about.

Nothing wrong with pop servers, it's the clients that do too much
hand-holding so people don't understand the tools they are using.

OK. I'll revise my comments: Don't use POP servers if you expect the
mail server to actually hold on to your mail in a useful way after you've
connected, despite the fact that you might be able to ask it to. Don't
use POP servers if you will be reading your mail from more than one
machine or more than one mail client. Don't use POP servers if you don't
fully understand what situations it was designed for and the dangers of
trying to get it to work outside of the scope of that original purpose.
Don't use POP servers if the same mailbox is tied to a webmail account.
Don't use POP servers if you want some of the additional functionality
that IMAP provides.

Other than that, feel free to use POP servers.

OK I can see you have reasons for saying it, but I have used one POP
account for 14 years now, and not had any problems with accessing from
multiple machines, nor from using webmail with it, since it was
introduced by the provider about 8 years ago. Everything I want left on
the server remains there. I understand that you can have folders etc on
imap, and other features, but there is nothing wrong with POP mail!
Other more recent accounts I have are also POP, are also accessed from
multiple machines and locations, as well as via webmail. Again, no problems.

If you have had problems, then my experience and that of others I know
(and manage accounts for) prove that they are not the fault of POP.

POP works fine but I wouldn't use either POP or IMAP myself due
to the fact that the password is sent in the clear. My email
provider does not support either for security reasons, but it
does support secure versions of both (POPS and IMAPS). However,
since my client supports both I see no reason to use POP because
IMAP looks to be a superior protocol.

Well you have the choice not to use them. And just because you
use a company to get IP connectivity doesn't mean you have to
use their email service.

OK, I forget that there are still people who have POTS but no
ADSL:-)

Googlemail is free and now offers an IMAP service (though
currently in a somewhat broken form as I understand it).
