Is it possible to type a caption or title on to a photo whilst it is in
iPhoto? I need to do this in order to send some photos to overseas e-mail
correspondents who don't know the subjects.
I know it is possible to tile and describe them in the Information box in
iPhoto, but it's a permanent title on the photo itself that I need.
If it's not possible in iPhoto, can it be done with any other software? >> Stay informed about: Typing caption on to photo in iPhoto |

Your best bet is to add comments to your photos, then output them to a
web page with the option to include the comments. Then its trivial to
put the web page up somewhere. Once you do that, the photos are there
online until you take them away and you can simply email out the URL to
whomever you want.
If you prefer to embed comments in the photos, which is a horrible idea,
I imagine Graphic Converter can do it. >> Stay informed about: Typing caption on to photo in iPhoto |

It's a simple task to title photos in iPhoto. Just click on the
existing name, usually a name provided by the camera, and type whatever
you want, not including return characters.

Yes, but this doesn't put the caption within the body of the photograph does
it? And that's what I want to do. >> Stay informed about: Typing caption on to photo in iPhoto |

Sorry, I misunderstood. You could use GraphicConverter to add a margin
to the top or bottom of the photo and then add whatever text you want.
You can set iPhoto to use GraphicConverter as the editing program and
then the photos in the iPhoto library would be updated and you would
still have the "Revert to Original" option.

If I understand the problem, what you want to do is give the photo a
descriptive title in the Info box and have that title appear on a file that
you send in email.
The way to do that is to go to File > Export and select Use Title (and also
Use Extension). The exported file will be given the name you gave it in the
Info box.

I've encountered the same problem and couldn't find any way to do it
easily.
In my case I've undertaken the task of scanning old family photos and
putting them up on a web site for the family to enjoy. Many of the
photos go back to the early 1900's and it is difficult to find anyone
who can identify the people in the photos, location or approximate date.
For those that I've managed to get some information, this is what I've
come up with:
I bring the photo into Photoshop and resize the canvas to be 50 pixels
taller than the photo itself, which leaves a blank area at the bottom of
the photo. I then add a type layer and put the information in this
space. Then flatten the image and save it as a jpeg. The resulting photo
has the information imbedded in the photo itself and will always remain
with the photo. If someone wants to download a photo for printing it is
easily cropped to eliminate the information if it isn't wanted on the
printed photo.
This works although it is time consuming when there are hundreds of
photos to deal with.
If anyone can come up with a better solution both I and the OP would
love to hear it.
FWIW,

I think that maybe I have not expressed myself very well.
What I want to do is this.
Take for instance a photograph of me. I want to be able to write on the
photo itself something like "This is Peter at the beach". When the photo is
printed, there across the photo are the words as above.
I have found one way of doing this, but it is a little cumbersome. Export
the jpeg from iPhoto to Apple Works>Drawing. Using the text tool then allows
you to write whatsoever you want across the photo. Then save it back to
iPhoto and there you are, "bob's your uncle", as they say "up North".
I was hoping that maybe there could be a way of doing this from within
iPhoto? Seemingly not.
I thank everyone for their input and replies. >> Stay informed about: Typing caption on to photo in iPhoto |

You did all right. What you want to do is superimpose text ON the image, much
like the annoying (to me) date/time "stamp" that appears (as an option) on the
prints made from the last generation film cameras.
You'll even see such a "stamp" on photos created by a digital camera. Given
the meta data imbedded in digital photos, I find this particularly amusing and
dismiss it as the inability of the shooter to figure out how to turn the
feature off.
> I was hoping that maybe there could be a way of doing this from within

I agree.
Given that iPhoto operates solely in the digital "world", the user can add
virtually anything to the meta data of the file. It would be the
responsibility of whomever is PRINTING the image to add the superimposed text.
I assume this would require the use of Photoshop/Elements, GraphiConverter or
similar application. Good luck.

Now, I am, too.
After reading your words, I bought and downloaded iWatermark and, for several
hours, have been using it. It is really powerful, full-featured software for
a mere $20. It's GREAT! Thanks for posting the link.
