My goal is to remove ID3 tags from all my mp3 files. Please don't ask
me why or tell me I shouldn't.
I've seen it mentioned in many posts that iTunes can do this quite
easily by right-clicking a file (or group of files), selecting
"convert ID3 tags...", check off "tag version," choose "none" from the
dropdown and click OK.
Sounds great. Unfortunately it has no effect. Tag remains.
Can anyone either (a) confirm this behavior in iTunes or (b) tell me
what I'm doing wrong?
Alternately, anyone know of a program similar to Windows' ID3Kill that
will simply batch strip MP3 tags?
OS: OS X 10.4.10
iTunes: v7.5
Thanks much in advance,

Why not just do this?:
1. Select all of the songs.
2. From the iTunes menu bar, select File > Get Info.
3. Clear all of the fields in the Multiple Item Information window.

On one hand, thanks for pointing it out. Originally I couldn't figure
out the script that Gregory had written and the thread had devolved
into an argument over why I didn't want to use tags. So I simply
stopped reading.
But I just tried that script again and it worked like a charm.
On the other hand, "Did you have any success with that script?" might
have been a bit more civil. By assuming something more insidious than
mere ignorance ...well, you made yourself look like a giant dick.
Reply if you want but I'm here to solve a problem, not argue.
Especially with you. =)

This is kind of funny. I didn't realize you were the guy who wrote
the script for me.
So thanks for the script. It works quite well. For some reason I
couldn't get it to work last time. Probably so annoyed with everyone
else for jacking my thread that I missed your post about it being a
drag-and-drop app.
But still, assuming "ignorance over malice" is a good way to roll.

Probably because it doesn't actually do specifically what the OP wants
to accomplish. >> Stay informed about: Stripping ID3 Tags in ITunes |

Nearly 4 months ago you asked this very same question. You got answers -
not just responses telling you you shouldn't want to do that, but actual
answers telling how to do it. If you want a *different* answer today,
please explain what was insufficient about the prior answers. >> Stay informed about: Stripping ID3 Tags in ITunes |

Get a third-party MP3 editing tool. Mp3Rage might be the ticket. There
are some command-line tools so you could grind away at a directory full
of files.
Versiontracker is a good place to start. >> Stay informed about: Stripping ID3 Tags in ITunes |

The OP's stated goal was "to remove ID3 tags from all my mp3 files".
Does clearing the fields in the Multiple Item Information window *not*
remove ID3 tags from the selected files?

In fact, I did assume ignorance. Specifically, I assumed that *I* was
ignorant of what you didn't find adequate about the prior solution. As a
result, I politely asked for that clarification so I could provide a
better answer this time.
You sure it's me that looks "like a giant dick?" >> Stay informed about: Stripping ID3 Tags in ITunes |

It does not. This is common behavior for tools that edit ID3 tags. The
expense of rewriting the entire file to deal with adjustments to the
contents of a relatively small variable-length header on that file is
generally taken to be significant enough that it's avoided unless it's
either necessary (growing beyond the capacity of the current ID3
structure) or will save a truly large amount of space (perhaps from
deleting artwork). Kind of like how consumer file systems "delete" a
file by marking its directory entry as unused, blanking out any number
of fields in an ID3 structure doesn't reclaim the storage. It just
blanks out enough so that the next reader doesn't see it. >> Stay informed about: Stripping ID3 Tags in ITunes |

Ah, ok. Good to know. I've never bothered to examine audio files after
changing ID3 tags. Thanks for the explanation.

If you still believe your response was measured, yes.
If you believe your response was actually *polite* ...definitely.
Still, the tool you wrote works even better than ID3Kill. With
ID3Kill I'd have to open it, set the directory (usually the same but
sometimes not) and then run the tool. With yours all I need to do is
drag and drop. So big thanks.
Now I just need to figure out a way to get the contextual menu to
offer your script as an option (FruitMenu perhaps...).
Look, why don't you just take the credit for writing a great tool,
gratis, and as a side bonus the realization that not everyone who
repeats a question wants "a different answer today." You'll be a
better person for it.
