Looks to me like the server is broken. The response to the NEWGROUPS
request is supposed to be a response code line "231 New newsgroups
follow.", followed by a sequence of lines listing all the new
newsgroups, followed by a line containing only "." to indicate the end
of the list.

It looks to me like that server doesn't send the response code line
before the list of new newsgroups. Or maybe it only does this wrong
when the list is empty. Either way, it's broken.

If you can configure MacSOUP not to check for new newsgroups, or maybe
only check once a week or once a month, that would probably help.

Glad to hear that are others still using the pharaoh of all newsreaders.
Thoth is the best and continues to work like a charm under 10.4.11.

Cheers!

I can't speak to any of your questions, Asterix, since I've been happy
enough with Thoth's performance as both a text and binary newsreader
since I first installed it (before MacSOUP ever existed, I think) that
I've never even tried SOUP. Thoth just works! And as far as Leopard
goes, I'm running a machine that would barf on it (a 466 MHz G4), so I
can't answer that either.

Cheers!
