My iPhoto Library has fewer images than yours, but I'm running
it on a >4-year-old G4 tower, and it runs just fine.

With a MUCH newer Mac, you should not be having the trouble you report.

You might try importing 50-100 images into a NEW iPhoto Library:

Export to a new folder some test photos from your current iPhoto Library then
quit iPhoto.

While holding the [option] key, start iPhoto. It should present a dialogue
asking to either create a new library or locate an existing library. Select
NEW library and let it finish.

Import the test photos into the new iPhoto.

If the speed is still slow, the problem is probably elsewhere. I can't help
you. (sorry)

If the speed is significantly improved, your original iPhoto Library may need
repair. Delete the test/newer iPhoto Library, startup iPhoto (selecting the
original library) then quit it again.

While holding the [option] AND [command] key, start iPhoto again. Select the
rebuild function that suits your needs. Good luck.

What kind of Mac do you have? Most importantly, how much available disk
space and RAM does your Mac have? What type of images do you tend to
keep in your iPhoto library?

I have just under 9,000 pictures in iPhoto and my iPhoto library is over 19
GB. I'm just guessing, but with 24,000 pictures and only 9 GB free disk
space, it sounds like the disk may be churning.

Why don't you get a big external disk and move your library there? Or move
other stuff to the external to free up space on the internal.

That sounds close to my setup:

8724 photos and 55 movies = 16.8 GB as stated WITHIN iPhoto.

But, get this: When queried using Get Info in Finder, my iPhoto Library
package is 34.82 GB. What's with THAT? Overhead? More than twice than what
is indicated by the iPhoto app? Very strange.

9 GB SHOULD be plenty of free space. Either that or I'm missing something.
I can never forget that my first hard-disk drive was 20 MB.

That's good advice. Also, with the big external drive, he can begin using
Time Machine.
