Been playing, I have.

I set up a coal power plant in a city, and ran high tension lines from
it to an adjoining city.

However, the game doesn't give me any options for "Neighbor Deals" to
buy the power from the power plant in the adjoining city.

What do I have to do to activate the Neighbor Deal, and share the power
plant?

The manual is no help. It says all I have to do is connect, and that's
clearly not the case.

Other requirements besides running the power lines from city to city
include:

1. Seller must have surplus of > 1,000 of the unit being sold over the
needs of seller's own city -- this is true in all deals, not just
power.

2. Buyer can only purchase one service from any given seller -- so if
you're already taking your neighbor's trash, you can't also sell them
electricity.

3. Buyer must have enough funds to cover the cost of the service being
purchased for twelve months -- even though there is no contract and the
buyer could cancel the deal after a single month.

BTW, what is your overall feeling of SC4? Does it perform well? What hardware
are you using to run it? I was thinking of buying it but my hardware falls
a little bit below the recommended rig, 5OOMHz G4 with a Radeon under the
latest OS X.

I'm hesistant about that. Perhaps with the lowest video settings.

Thanks for the comment. What are you using to run it and how would you qualify
the performance relative to your system?

My previous machine was a Pismo: 500MHz G3 (G3 G3 G3).
SC4K wouldn't even sneer at it.

My current machine is way overpowered for SimCity in all ways.
I can't estimate that SC4K's demands are because it doesn't
trouble my setup at all.

I don't really know about your machine precisely, but the box
says that your speed, 255Meg memory and 32Meg video memory is
the minimum configuration. It will run, but not very fast.

Has anyone attempted to use SC4K on a machine with reasonable specs,
but only 16mb VRAM? Will it launch at all?

I have a TiBook G4 667mhz with 512mb RAM, and I think the only
dealbreaker might be its ATI Radeon with only 16mb of VRAM.

Thanks for any comments.

I know it won't launch with 8mb of VRAM -- tried on a TiBook/500 I was
borrowing while mine was in the shop. Had to go a week without playing
the game. Almost took up tetherball as a replacement.

My guess is, no. From Aspyr's website:

--- snip ---

SC4: "Will Run with Software Driver when Next Launched" error message

Issue
When launching SimCity 4, the game displays an error message that says
"Will run with Software driver when next launched." It then quits.
Launching it again gives the same thing, so it's stuck in a loop.
What's wrong?

Discussion
That error message most likely means that your computer's video
hardware does not meet the necessary requirements. As the box points
out, this game needs an ATI Radeon or NVidia GeForce video chipset,
with at least 32 MB of video RAM (VRAM). If you do not have this, it
displays that error message and quits.

You can check to see what you have in your computer by opening the
Apple System Profiler utility, and look for display card in the Devices
and Volumes tab.

In addition to my G4, I'm also using a Pismo but running at 400MHz only.
I didn't really hope I would be able to run it on my paltry Pismo, but I'm
wondering what you mean exactly by "SC4K wouldn't even sneer at it"?

I forget how low the video memory is in a Pismo but SC4K didn't
like it.

Are you thinking of SimCity 3000, which was a wanton act of
hatred directed at Mac users? I've done a little fiddling with SimCity
4, albeit in stores (even if I were inclined to buy the game without a
written apology my old iBook doesn't have the video RAM for it), and it
does seem to be reasonably stable.

Actually, I think since SimCity 3000 we've been blessed with a
mass of reasonably stable strategy games. I don't remember any that
have been prone to more than the rare crash when you figure that you'll
save just as soon as you finish *this* little project ...

X2 The Threat seems a bit on the crashy side. They blame Apple's OpenAL
implementation, so there is hope that a system software update will fix
it.
