Routers

Networking, including wireless networking, is standards based. That means
that each manufacturer should be making their product interchangeable with
any other manufacturer. And for the most part that is true. So for basic
wireless networking, you should be able to get the Belkin to work with your
computer.

Most problems arise from user inexperience, and from non-standard naming
conventions between manufacturers. The same functionality might go by three
different names from three different manufacturers. Occasionally a
manufacturer will throw in a non-standard wrinkle that can cause a connection
problem.

If you set up the wireless router, make sure you use the highest level
encryption available.

Most people agree that it is safer to use the admin account only for changing
configurations, and that you should set up a separate user level account for
daily use.

FWIW I've been using a BelkinG+ for a couple years now and it works just
fine. I did "clone" the MAC address to keep Comcast happy

Carl,

I have used a variety of firewall routers behind a couple different Comcast
cable modem over the years, sometimes even swapping between two different
units several times within a couple hours, and I have never needed to clone a
MAC address. Is this something that you have done from necessity?

I haven't asked (Comcast of Eastern MA), so I can't say for sure that
they still check the MAC address. I know they did 8 or 10 years ago.
