Is there a quick way to quit all programs?
When I want to restart, in the Dock i have to laboriously click on the
icon of every open program and wait a long time for every program to
quit before I can restart.
I'm using 10.4.11 on a 2006 Imac.

Don't know if there is. However, there are very few programs that
would interfere with shutting down your computer, in my experience.
Groupwise won't let you shut down for some reason, and if you have
open, unsaved documents, most programs will give you a dialog box
asking if you want to save the docs. Another workaround is to use
command-tab to bring up a list of open programs, and just keep hitting
command-q to quit the highlighted program.

What makes you think you have to manually quit applications before
restarting? Just restart and let the operating system quit them for you.

You _don't_ have to quit open programs prior to logging out, restarting,
or shutting down a Mac. Doing any of those will automatically quit all
programs, stopping to ask if you want to save unsaved changes if
appropriate.

That is not quite true. Groupwise (the email program from Novell) just
stops the shutdown process, and gives you a dialog box telling you
so.

Safari will hang (default behavior) if you have 2 or more windows/tabs
open. If you select Safari, you will see the usual dialog box, asking
if you want to quit. On my machine, at least (Al iMac 24"/2.8 GHz,
running 10.4.11), Safari does not automatically come to the front when
this happens.

Nope. Actually, the app doesn't say anything. All you get is a system
message saying that Groupwise cancelled the restart. Oddly enough,
Groupwise also quits, but the restart (or shutdown) is cancelled. I
believe Groupwise for the Mac is a Java application. Could that have
anything to do with it?

That's not the sort of "hang" we are talking about in this thread
though.

Maybe not, but it *does* display a sheet or dialog box asking if you
want to close all tabs.

Why?
To me, that sounds like a badly-designed feature.

Well, it is behavior that stops the shutdown process.

I said it does. But, the dialog remains hidden until Safari is the
frontmost application. Could this also be the case for other apps, like
Word and Excel, that give a dialog asking if you want to save the
document, but you don't see it until the app becomes the frontmost app?

Does it state a reason that it's going to prevent the computer from
restarting? Does it allow you to abort cancellation of the restart?

Thanks, everyone.
I'll try next time to be patient and wait for several minutes for the
computer to log out.
When I go Apple > Log Out it seems that nothing happens, so I click on
the program icons again – or diffeent program icons – to try to speed
the process, but then sometimes the Force Quit window says that a few of
the programs are "Not responding", so I am forced to force-quit those
programs.
