Could you elaborate? Currently I display a full screen showing the content of
my various spaces. Are you saying that I can get the same in just a corner of
the screen?

In addition to setting a key to display all spaces at once, you could
also define a screen corner (or four) to do the same thing:

System Preferences -> Exposé & Spaces -> Exposé -> Active Screen

Many thanks and it does indeed work. Interesting that one sets the option in
the Expose and not the Spaces preference pane.

'cause Exposé got the concession for managing screen corner functions.
Probably underbid the Spaces mob.

How did you tell it to? Is this something stupidly simple I've
overlooked? Wouldn't be the first time.

Spaces preferences, application assignments, click on the + sign
I did find that when I first added application that way they all
defaulted to space 1, but you can alter that once they are entred.
not an entirely perfect system. but useable.

Hmm. I never saw that before. It has Toast set to always use Space 1,
but, but, but, I didn't do that -- Toast must have done it.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas.

The Spaces preference panel provides the means for the reassignment of which
space an application will default to. I guess that because of this it was
felt that the initial default assignment to space 1 was sufficient given that
without leaving Spaces preferences it could easily be changed. Perhaps having
a more prominent method of assigning the initial space would be an
improvement, but I never had a problem using the system as it is.

I tried setting a screen corner to enter and exit the Spaces screen and ended
up removing it as I liked the "middle button" on the mouse (scroll wheel on
my Kensington Slimblade mouse) better. There was less chance of accidental
entry.

Indeed options are nice! I've long learned that what works for one person
doesn't for another. To each his/her own.

Now if Spaces could just be named that would be a perfect little system
