When a flash drive is attached MacOS feels the need to create
a .Spotlight-V100 and .Trashes folder along with a ._.Trashes file
even if the drive is attached only to read files and not write. Is
there any way to keep MacOS from writing these unauthorized files, as
it's usually considered rude to write files to other people's flash
drives if you're only copying files off? Especially since this could
be quite large for a large attached drive.

Its not an infection; its simply Windows showing Mac OS X internal files
that it doesn't know what to do with. Those files are small, so if they
bother you on the Windows side, just trash them.

If I'm using a Mac and someone gives me their flash drive to copy
files off of, I'm supposed to instruct them to remove files using
their computer that my operating system forces onto their drives
whether I want to or not? That's not fixing the problem. How do I
prevent those files from being created in the first place?

Quit bitching. It's a natural part of the operating system. Those
invisible files don't hurt anything.

Sounds like FortiGuard is a big pain in the ass, to me. ; )

I agree with your desire. A similar thing happens when copying
thumbs.db from Windows to Macs.

It's rude to copy files to someone's system that don't belong.

Why is it such a big deal?

Anyway, as someone else has pointed out, the solution is BlueHarvest:

Don't open them with the Finder. Use the commandline to examine
directories and copy files.
