I found this group through the Moz website.

Now for my question: I have an old computer running mac os 8. What is
the newest browser that I could use without upgrading anything? I have
netscape 3, but might be able to get 4.

Thanks,

It is important to know which "old computer" model, since the answer
will be different depending on it's capabilities. Whether it is a 68k
model or a PowerPC model is particularly important.

I forgot to also ask, which OS 8? There is a big difference between 8.1
and 8.6.

I think iCab 2.9.8[*] is the newest and most modern that'll work under
Mac OS 8.0. But there may be some older Mozilla version available, which
would be better at CSS. If that matters to you.

Note that "old computer" is hardly a definition. Given that you're
running Mac OS 8, it might be a 68k CPU. If so, iCab 2.9.8 will still be
an option, but I doubt there ever was a 68k build of Mozilla.

I think newest Netscape Communicator 4.8 works in MacOS 8.1.
I think you could find updates here:

At least Communicator 4.7 should work with OS 7.6.1

you can run Netscape 4.8.0. A better alternative is probably iCab.

Not if his "old computer" has a 68k processor.

it's a 7100/66av. I might go for moz 1.0(about), as it should work.
As for the version of os 8, It doesn't say. The splash say "Mac OS" and
the system info says "mac os 8"

Considering the following system requirements:

  Mac OS 8.5 or later
PowerPC 604e 266 MHz or faster processor, or G3/G4
  64 MB RAM
36 MB of free hard disk space

I think "should work" is slightly too optimistic. Smile I tried Mozilla on
a 225 MHz 603e and it "worked" but I quickly deleted it. With a 66 MHz
601 you will probably decide to delete it about 3 times faster. Smile

You should probably update to 8.1 since 8 wasn't quite ready for prime
time. It's a free update.

Getting back to the browser question. In my heretical opinion, the best
browser for Macs of this era is MICROSOFT! Internet Explorer. It will
work with the most websites at a reasonable speed. Netscape 4.8 is
faster but its dated rendering engine renders lots of websites unusable.
Until iCab has better CSS support, it too is a questionable choice.

You didn't mention how much RAM you have. Browsers are RAM hogs. iCab
says 5 MB free RAM, Internet Explorer says 16 MB total, and Netscape
says 24 MB total. In other words, you need more than that if you want
things to run reliably.

Then Opera 5 and 6 would also be an option. <http://www.opera.com/>
seems to only offer 6.03, which has advantages over 5 - but personally I
thought 5 was better. Dunno where you can still get it though.

iCab 3.0 has excellent CSS 2.1 support, but the current betas aren't
publicly available - only to registered users. iCab 3.0 for Mac OS pre-X
is a little less polished at the moment[*]. No idea how well it runs
under Mac OS 8.1. Most users seem to be running it under Mac OS 8.6 and
up.

Still, even in spite of its CSS problems, iCab 2.9.8 is well worth a
serious test run. If the CSS bugs bother you you can always switch off
CSS support. No site ought to be CSS-dependant anyway. (Yes, I know,
many are.)
