How do you change the user's background highlight color for posts by the
user in MT-NewsWatcher (in the thread list). It defaults to a vivid
pink, or perhaps electric raspberry. Many years ago when I first started
MT-NW, I think I had an option to choose a different color. I've looked
all over the app (including the docs) and can't find where to set this
attribute. I presume this setting is somewhere obvious, but I can't find
it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think you are looking for the MT-NW Preferences > Filtering & Junk >
New Filter Defaults > Defaults button, which displays this dialog box:

When I choose Filters > Create Filter from the MT-NW menu bar, I get
this dialog box, where the default color is black text with a white
background:

Thanks for responding JR. I had indeed tried your suggestions, and I
could have created a filter to do the job once I realized that the
little white square behind the black hilite square controlled the
background (D'oh). However, inspired by your examples, I thoroughly
re-examined MT-NW and Eureka!, or actually, Double D'oh!, I found the
answer.
Under the 'Windows' item in the menu bar is the totally obvious, yet
delightfully obscure, item 'Show Filters List'. There it is, big as
life, under the first folder '*': 'Highlight [in pink] if 'from'
contains "fmoore@gcfn.org" '. I doubleclicked on that entry and changed
the background color.
I knew it had to be something obvious. Thanks for helping me re-think
this.

Ahhh... I completely misunderstood your phrase "the user's background
highlight color for posts by the user" as bad English meaning "the
default background color for new filters". My bad! Anyhow, glad you
found it. : )

I am still confused on how you add a background color? Any help will be

I'm confused by your question. Did you want to know how to create a
filter that will add highlight colors or how to add colors to those
filters. (Just having morning coffee now so I'm still naturally confused
 .)
Example of creating a filter: If message from (You, email@used for
newsgroups.com) highlight (select colors).
In this same window, there are two overlapping color swatches visible.
The top one changes text color. The one underneath, changes background
color. Click on either swatch to show a box of colors to choose from.
Click a color to select it or click Other to create a custom color.
The filter is applied to the list of available messages - the list that
shows author, subject, date and similar details as line items. With the
example filter in action, messages sent by you are shown with the colors
selected in your filter.

Sharon,
I have no real issue with the highlight color. What I wanted was to
