I have XP, OE6. Suddenly I lost all my saved emails. Searching for *.dbx
produced no results. Recently the machine has been freezing and Ctrl-Alt-Del
(when it eventually worked) showed msimn taking about 98% of the cpu. I have
tried restoring from old back-ups, (saved when OE was working ok,) on an
external hard drive, but still no messages and no dbx found.

I have just realised what I did! For security in case of a crash, I set OE to
store messages on my second "D" drive. Because this is fairly small, I
carried out some clearing up and inadvertently deleted the store. Part will
have subsequently been overwritten. Is there any way of retrieving?

You might try asking the question on a non-Mac group...
(Maybe the last part of the name of this group was obscured?)
<microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac>

Perhaps an OE6 newsgroup, rather than a Mac one?
Such as;
<microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress>
