I recently purchased a LinkSys BEFSX41 router to replace the TrendNet
router which came with my WildBlue satellite internet connection, because
the TrendNet didn't allow me to disable UPnP.
While the TrendNet "just worked", the LinkSys stops receiving bytes every
two to three hours. At that point, I can either press the Reset button on
the back of the router, or do a "DHCP Release" / "DHCP Renew" on the
router's status page, and I'm good for another 2-3 hours.
I've not changed any network settings on my Mac Pro (10.4.11) when I
switched routers. The LinkSys is set up to "Obtain an IP automatically",
just as the TrendNet was. The only changes I've made from the defaults
on the LinkSys are the admin password and the timezone settings, plus
I've upgraded the router's firmware to 1.52.15, the most recent on the
LinkSys web site (the router had the same bad behavior with the firmware
it came with: 1.15.9).
I've tried power-cycling the router, power-cycling the satellite modem
and then, after it came up, the router, all to no avail.
What can I do to fix the router so that I don't have to Reset it every
couple of hours?
TIA,
-Dave

Who is your ISP and do they require you to register the MAC address of
the device connected to their modem?

Oops, I missed the reference to "WildBlue" above; sorry.

I'm 99% sure you've already done this, but it's
worth asking: have you set the "keep alive" option
on the setup page?

Thanks for the response. To answer your question, I haven't made such a
setting because I can't find (or recognize) any such setting on my
router's Setup (or any other) page. Being a clueless network user, I
might be looking right at it and not recognize it, but there's nothing
called "Keep Alive" or similar wording. What should I be looking for?
The "Internet Setup" section of the Setup page for "Obtain an IP
automatically" offers only Host Name and Domain Name optional settings
(both are left blank), and an MTU size override setting, currently
disabled.
I see that the connection type "PPoE" has a "Keep Alive: Redial Period
xx Seconds" setting, but, I'm using DHCP, not PPoE".
TIA,
-Dave

Oops. Hadn't thought of that - I've only ever used
PPOE. Apologies.

Now am I missing something here? I didn't think that PPPoE and
the use of DHCP were mutually exclusive. In fact, I believe that
I've run PPPoE and DHCP simultaneously on occasion.
DHCP is a method for arbitrating IP addresses (as opposed to
manually setting them to a locked value)
PPPoE is a connection protocol that is session oriented.
I'm pretty sure that you can run both at the same time. If you
are getting timeouts on your SESSION, I don't believe that it has
anything to do with whether you are using DHCP or you are
manually assigning your IP configurations. DHCP does have a lease
time but it typically can be in the order of several days.
Your DHCP release/renew might be a red herring since it causes
activity to be transmitted on the net possibly renewing the PPPoE
session as well.
If I'm in left field here, please someone correct me! But I
think that Nollaig's original suggestion might still have merit.

As I mentioned before, I'm clueless on networks, so please forgive
and correct any stupidities that follow...
I don't see how to "run both at the same time." The DHCP ("obtain IP
address automatically") and PPoE settings are mutually exclusive on my
router's setup page. And my old router (set up by the WildBlue
installation guy) was set to use DHCP, so I just copied that.

I failed to mention before that I have Mail set up to download email
from the POP server every 5 minutes, so there should be regular network
activity initiated by my Mac. And the router "drops the connection" even
while I'm working. Yesterday I was reading a newly-downloaded Web page,
and about 2 minutes later clicked a link to read the next page, and the
router had "dropped the connection" during that short interval.
