Hi,
I have installed Mac OS 10.5 on a computer. Another computer has 10.4 so
I keep both. I would like to install "Mail" from 10.5 to 10.4 (i.e, copy
the "Mail" app in my 10.5 partition to my 10.4 one. Of course, I'd
delete preferences and copy folders in "/library" whose name contains
"Mail").
Is that safe? What do Apple products needs from one version to another?
P.S: sorry for an eventual bad english. >> Stay informed about: Installing a newer version of an app |

It may not work at all, depending on whether frameworks and libraries
that Mail uses have changed significantly since 10.4 (likely). It
shouldn't hurt to try it, though. If Mail refuses to start up on your
10.4 system, just trash it.

Thank you. So I will just copy them (unless, of course, the versions of

I advise you not to attempt copying any libraries or frameworks from Mac
OS X 10.5 over to 10.4, as that will almost certainly cause major
problems with other parts of the operating system and other applications
that reply on those libraries and frameworks.

In fact, when I move/copy system files from one disk to another, I keep
them in an handy folder (such as "System
(copy)/Library/CoreServices/...", where "System (copy)" is a folder I
just created temporarily. If something goes wrong, I go back.
Thanks for your advice. >> Stay informed about: Installing a newer version of an app |

Thank you. I'll do as you suggest, then.
That's a shame; I was particularly interested in copying "Phto Booth"
(the 10.5 version needs a library to run on 10.4, given the crash report
generated when it quits). >> Stay informed about: Installing a newer version of an app |

Why not just upgrade to 10.5?

Because an application is not supported there (I have purchased a kind
of Modem that connects on USB; the application used to start the
connection crashes on launch in 10.5). I've read, on a forum, that this
modem was not supported in 10.5, so I decided to re-install 10.4 (I
purchased my computer in October 2007 with 10.4.10 as the DVD install
version, and I purchased the 10.5 DVD after that. I just hope 10.5.2 and
after won't deceive me).
Also, there are things that have changed in 10.5, and I'm sad with that.
The hability to search in chosen locations has been removed;
QuickLook opens with the space bar and the key is not customizable (I
have plenty folders whose name start with a space so, alphabetically,
they are above others);
In icon mode (the only I use), all my icons are 128x128 since I
upgraded; in addition, and if I remember correctly, the "Apply for all
folders" radio button in the "settings" window has been removed.
Since at least 10.4.11, uploading to iDisk is broken for large files. I
want to try with 10.4.10 since I need to send a file to a friend.
I wanted to partition my disk with 2 partitions (one for 10.4 and one
for 10.5) since in 10.5 we can divide the disk without losing
informations but it says "No space left on device", which is also a
known problem. Since I have 79 Gb of musics, I didn't wanted to run the
installer on DVD (of either 10.4 or 10.5) to partition my disk. >> Stay informed about: Installing a newer version of an app |

If you're willing to tell, I'd find more information about this "kind of
modem" interesting!
Just out of curiosity, why didn't you just purchase the Apple USB modem?

I have poorly explained, sorry. I have only one computer which shipped
with 10.4.10. Then, I bought 10.5 since 10.4 was on its end (if I had
bought my computer in the beginning of a major version, I would even not
buy the next major version, but, in my case, I wanted an OS which can
evolve). >> Stay informed about: Installing a newer version of an app |
