Hi all.
I am a pc guy. Have been forever.
I've pretty much hated macs after having to work on Grandma's OS9
desktop.
I like OSx much better.
She died recently and I inherited both her desktop and her iBook G4.
It's OS version 10.3.9, 1ghz processor, 256 meg ram.
Just wondering what cool stuff I can do with this or if I should just
sell it.
Like I said I've got tons of pc software and am not going to switch,
but if the G4 can do something for me I'll consider keeping and using
it.
I've looked into office software that can share files with my pc stuff
but about the only thing I could come up with is the open office
stuff. Not sure how useful that would be.
I'm a musician so if you know of any music related software, I'd be
interested.
Are there any relatively inexpensive games out there that are just
must haves?
I do like the form factor of the G4. It's very small.
Is it true that Macs don't have as much of a virus problem as Windows
or is that just hype?
I guess that's the gist of it.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
No, I'm not trying to start a Mac/Pc war. We don't need to go
there!!
Thanks, in advance, to all.

get more ram for it. os x on 256 meg of ram is not exactly ideal. the
ibook takes pc2100 memory and the maximum is 1.25 gig. you don't say
which desktop it is, but that probably could use more memory too.

open office is free, but compatibility with ms office on a pc is not
that great. if you need to exchange files, get the real microsoft
office. also, textedit (included with os x) can read and write msword
files.

that should be on there, although probably an older version.

and search for whatever interests you. it lists most software that's
available, free, shareware and commercial.

it's not hype at all. there are *zero* mac viruses in the wild. there
are a few proof of concepts that require the user to download and
install them, and even then, they don't work very well. >> Stay informed about: Inherited G4, what to do with it? |

Go to http://www.versiontracker.com and have a look around to see what
interests you. Adding more RAM is a good idea too, as someone else
suggested. >> Stay informed about: Inherited G4, what to do with it? |

It's true for the G4. In many years of using macs, I've only had one
virus, and that was a word macro virus.
unfortunately I suspect that many viruses (viri?) will port easily to
intel macs

they won't. it has nothing to do with the processor and everything to
do with the operating system. os x and windows are vastly different,
and the methods by which malware works on windows doesn't exist on os
x. >> Stay informed about: Inherited G4, what to do with it? |

Only if you run Windows on the Mac.

You suspect wrong. Viruses take advantage of flaws and vulnerabilities
in operating systems and the software that runs on them, not the
hardware. >> Stay informed about: Inherited G4, what to do with it? |
