Last week I made Adobe Acrobat 8 the Safari 3.0 plug in for PDF
files.
Today I needed to print a 2007 IRS form from their web site, so
I accessed the form PDF and clicked Print. Easy?
No: Mac OS X (10.4.11) refused saying

"The document could not be printed. Information needed to print
a page is not available"

Well, maybe SJ is tax delinquent so the IRS is blocking Mac OS X
computers until he pays. So I tried Print > Save as PDF. That was
blocked by a message saying that conversion was not allowed.

Next I downloaded the PDF to a folder, opened into Acrobat,
did a Save As to try to clean it, tried Print again, same messages.

Finally, in desperation I did a Save a Copy as PS, passed the
PS through Distiller, and that worked: the distilled PDF can be
printed.

What is going on? Who or what is responsible for these weird events?
The browser? Adobe? Max OS X? IRS?

Mine says something like 'creating printer' and then sits there
doing nothing, until I give up and croak it. Preview prints ok.
You have to control-click on the file, then select it with the
open with menu.

As for a decent plug-in, I use this -

http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/

It's less intrusive than Adobe's - it won't try to make itself a
default, breaking other things in the process, nor does it phone
home, etc. It's smaller, loads faster, is more efficient, and -
it works, including printing. Plus, it's free for personal use.
