Ah, for the benefit of my friend in the Colonies, I'd better translate...

A lum is a chimney, so the old toast is that "one desires that there should
always be smoke coming from your chimney", ie that you will always have
warmth and shelter.

OTOH, seeing it's New Year, it might be time for my bath...
