MacSoup is getting very slow on my Intel MBP. I'm looking for something
that is a bit more state of the art, integrated with OS X.

1. Offline capability.

2. Tree display of threads.

3. Easy way to find whether someone has followed up to a post of mine,
and where that post is. (MacSoup puts a mark in front of any group that
has followups to posts of mine. Brilliant.)

4. Fast! Until MacSoup started misbehaving it was lightning fast, since
it was completely text based.

5. Decent killfile system (in fact, that's where MacSoup is a tad
clunky).

Finally, I don't mind paying for decent software.

Suggestions?

Victor.

Hogwasher doesn't identify follow-ups to my posts.

Victor is looking for much the same thing I am, though there are a few
things more that I want. One is the ability to expand only threads
with new postings. Another is the ability not only to flag but also
automatically download replies to my posts. Most important is not to
crash when reading alt.folklore.computers.

I have given up and am finally buying a copy of Parallels Desktop so I
can install OS/2 and run the antique ProNews, which does all of the
above.

Do you realize you're using a rather outdated version of MacSOUP, and a
beta at that? The current version is 2.8.2, you're running 2.5b2.
Upgrading won't change the interface at all, but I know some of the
updates addressed performance issues on Intel Macs.

With regular expressions I disagree. The basics are not so hard.

I think we need to examine why MacSOUP is running slowly for you. I find
it to be lightening fast on my mid-2007 24" 2.8GHz iMac. I notice you
are using a rather old beta version of MacSOUP - v2.5b2. Have you simply
tried upgrading? It's the first thing I'd do, especially as you seem so
happy in other respects with MacSOUP, and other users do not report
slowdowns, even on older systems. Heck, up till a year ago I ran MacSOUP
on an aging G3 iMac with 10.3.9 and it was plenty fast, unlike most
other modern OSX software on that old machine.

I experienced a MAJOR slowdown on a Mac Pro under 10.5.5 because I had
an older version of MacSoup - download speeds were close to dial-up
speeds. Every now and then, I would get full speed after restarting the
computer, only to go back to the slow downloads the next time I accessed
the server. Got the latest MacSoup and things are flying again.

Good point.

MacSoup is also getting a bit stale. For instance, it doesn't support
Services. I use that quite often.

But upgrade I will.

That's a big one. I keep track of dozens of groups, but read most of
them only once a week if that. So I really want to see at a glance if I
should check up right now on something that I posted.

MacSoup has a bunch of these little touches that make it such a joy to
use. None of them are probably protected by patents, so it beats me why
other packages don't simply copy them.

If MacSoup had a more modern user interface, I would consider paying for
it.

I own Unison.

I wouldn't consider Unison's kill file system to be "decent" at all -
certainly nowhere near as useful as MacSoup's!

And Unison definitely has no way of quickly seeing, at a glance or
otherwise, whether someone has followed up to a post of yours.

What about self-defined rules?

Unison's rules are simple and mostly useless in comparison with
MacSoup's filters. You can't filter on most NNTP headers with Unison.
This is not the case with MacSoup.

> -- Group/Ungroup messages.

What about grouping and ungrouping messages? All decent news clients can
do that.

What Victor wants is a way to quickly (at a glance) distinguish between
replies to his posts from replies to other people's posts in a given
thread. With Unison, one must open and read each post in a thread to see
if it's a reply to one of your posts. In MacSoup and other more robust
news clients, you can create filters that will colorize or otherwise
mark posts that are replies to your own posts, so you can see, at a
glance, which are of particular interest to you.

> IMO, incorrect to both responses. Sorry.

IMO, you are incorrect to both responses. Sorry.

> And what's with the "Google" group tag?

Which tag would that be, exactly?
