Mac Everquest is alive and well. An off-the-cuff estimate would put the total number of active accounts in the 800 range, with about 100 on at any one time and over 200 on during peak times.
The Mac Everquest community forums are located at: http://www.eqmac.com (eqmac.com). You can find information on the free download of the game along with a 30-day free trial in a stickied post in the forums there (http://www.eqmac.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4639 (link)). There are also a few game screenshots and links to the active guilds there.
MacEQ runs on a single server, separate from the PC servers, and the environment is a substantial departure from the PC version. We don't have the population of teenage snerts that ruin the game for many of us (I left WoW because I couldn't stand the environment there). For those of you who have played Clan Lord, the game community and player attitudes are surprisingly similar.
We also don't have the population to support the IGN-style of farmers and campers, and there are no transfers of characters or equipment from the PC servers. The economy is very stable, and there are almost no "twinks"
The game content is frozen at a late 2002 level, in terms of expansion sets, which is a good thing. After more than two years of play, we have yet to reach the end of that content, and still have many "unexplored" zones.
Sony, or more specifically, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), provides us with minimal support, one part-time programmer, one part-time GM, two "Guides" (think of them as junior GMs), and two customer service reps. It's much less than a similar staff for a PC server, but our small staff seems to be enough to support the game. For some strange reason, our client software seems to be more stable than the PC counterpart.
Feel free to reply or PM me here or on eqmac (Nikolai) with any questions about Everquest. It's my addiction of choice.
