I remember it now; I actually read it, the prose intrigued me, Loveth
and she'd seen my profile and will like to know me more. What happens if
one actually replies to Loveth? What does the spammer get out of it? You
have a real email address with your real name on it, so in your case you
might wind up with more annoying emails, but Warren Oates doesn't exist
to get any real email. I even have that account set to immediately
delete anything with an attachment.

Do I smell Zara here? He was forging my email address in his posts for a
while, until I complained to his ISP.

I'd be interested in a good guide on how to calculate it. I can see it
would not be straightforward, and bigger single files would have less
overall. Any pointers? Some kind of counter that I can set to zero and
then have it measure all my traffic would be nice.

Searches have brought me plenty of 'calculators' and stuff, plus
estimates for the overhead on a single file size, but my search
techniques are otherwise lacking.

Does this discussion have anything to do with the fact that when I send
3 2.5mb pictures via email the total size of the message is
significantly more than 7.5mb?

Are you sending HTML email or plain text?

Rich text (I think that is HTML). I just tried sending some pics using
both and the size of the email message was the same. Should it be
different?

E-mail is not a binary transfer mechanism. Images contain arbitrary
8-bit symbols which must be encoded to a 7-bit ASCII character stream
which is consistent with the SMTP protocol.

There's no way the *message* sizes were exactly the same. The size of
HTML messages are always 2-4 times larger than the same message in plain
text.

I'm no liable to fall for any of those. Teenage girls, for instance,
didn't appeal to me even when I was a teenage boy. My first girl-friends
were in their 20s, and I've always liked, er, someone who's been around
the block a few times, as it were, so to speak and after a fashion, as
you might say to coin a phrase.

Blackmail. I can see it now: "Warren, who's this Loveth person you've
been giving money to?" "What, well, um, that's the pool boy, my sweet
...."

And I have all sorts of email addresses that lead into black holes.

Oh, I know that people fall for stuff, and that mostly it's because of
[insert name of current pres of USA]; I hadn't really thought of the
"sting" options before, since I always assumed that spammers were after
some sort of monetary gain.

I hope you didn't delete the message. Vivian Anthony is apparently
legitimate.
http://www.stop-scammers.com/letter.asp?id=887

I once replied to a similar message. I got a reply with the URL to her
website. There, she said she was an innocent college sophomore who
loved to pose. It was very important to her to protect minors from her
innocent pictures, so anyone who wanted to see would have to provide a
credit-card number as proof of age.

It was disappointing to realize she was sincere. I had been hoping to
discover the whole thing was a delightful prank by some unknown friend.
