I want to move movies from my Mac to my friend's PC hundreds of miles
away via FTP. I use Fetch now for updating my website and its great. I
wonder if I can use Fetch for uploading to him? And I wonder what would
be a good choice for him to use? Or would a private torrent be faster?
We tried AIM but it was only about 80k/sec so 2.5gb took all night.
Fast torrents come down in my system at 300-400k. oyah.net speed test
comes in at about 6000 down, 600 up. Using DSL.

You connection speed of 600 kilobits per second up means the absolute
fastest you can transfer files from your system to his will be around 75
kilobytes per second. So 80K/sec is your top speed.

You may be better off transferring the files with an external removable
USB hard drive.

He said the friend is hundreds of miles away, so snailmailing him the
files on DVD probably makes more sense.

I thought of that, of course, but then I thought if he has, say 20
movies to send, DVDs might take longer to burn than he would like.

Hey, I have an idea! Let's have the OP provide some more detail. Wink

Wow - so AIM was as good as it gets I guess. The odd thing was that it
hung right at the end with a second to go. That was a little
frustrating.

If 80k is the max than 80k it is. So you divide the kilobits per second
by about 8 I guess.

Yep. There are 8 bits in a byte. So 600 kilobits divided by 8 equals 75
kilobytes.

Depends on whether or you can (or want to) ignore overhead.

A 2.5 GB file will take 10 hours at 512Kb/s.
<http://www.numion.com/Calculators/Time.html>

Your DSL is limited to approximately 600 Kb/s or 600/8 = 75KB/s up.

Right now? A ceiling that needs some new gyproc. Above that a bedroom
that needs painting. Above that a roof that needs some new shingles.
Above that a a cold grey January sky. Above that, god in all her glory
waitin' to take me in her willin' arms.
