Disk Utility seems to work great (though it may not be the most
intuitive program in the world for some of us.) I notice that sometimes
..dmg and .iso files seem to accumulate on the left column under the
volumes. Is there any way of getting rid of these? Eject is greyed
out. There doesn't appear to be any delete option. I'm going to have a
pile of them accumulate there if I don't delete them soon.

Select (by clicking on them) the undesired icons and choose "Delete"
from the Edit menu.

You can just select them and hit the delete key.

If you drag them off the window, most of them will disappear in a puff
of smoke. Some don't though, and I've never figured out why. Eventually
they seem to just realize they aren't welcome and one day I open DU and
they're gone.

When it happened to me, I couldn't get rid of them with DU. To delete
the files, I had to open the Volumes folder, using the Go menu in the
finder.
