It seems to me that you are a perfect candidate for running Time
Machine. For about $100 or likely even less you can buy an external USB
1TB drive which can host Time Machine. With that combination you will
have no problem recovering "deleted by mistake" files. An exception
would be a file created and deleted between Time Machine's hourly
backups.

Again, it's always better to invest in a robust and reliable proactive
backup solution before investing in recovery solutions that are useful
only after catastrophe has occurred!

So get yourself an external (or internal, depending on your computer
model) hard drive, connect it to your computer, and enable Time Machine.
Next time you lose a file, simply recover it from the Time Machine
backup. Done deal.

great, so you're all set.

why isn't it backed up? obviously it's nothing important (otherwise it
would have been backed up), so no loss if you delete it.

look into other backup solutions.

also keep in mind that recovery apps don't generally work, especially
when you've used the drive for a while after realizing you deleted
something by mistake.

That's good to hear.

If you just want to make occasional *full* backups of your entire hard
drive, you could use the free version of SuperDuper to accomplish that,
but you'll ned a place to store the resulting disk image.

A friend of mine told me recently that "Copycat X" ($60) was able to
recover data from a failing hard drive of his when most other software
was unable to do so:

TechTool Pro has a Data Recovery component. You might check into that.
It's available for $79 (cheaper if you look around a bit) online:

And of course, as you know, there are other more expensive solutions
available.
