Michael-
This topic comes up periodically, and I don't recall seeing a definitive answer.
One suggestion is that the problem is that your machine can't read dvd
PLUS R disks, but requires MINUS R. That disagrees with what I've read,
that after the DVD is burned, it no longer matters whether it was plus or
minus.
I recall reading a warning on a DVD recorder at a store, saying that some
machines can't read a disk if it was not properly "finished" after being
burned. I suspect this refers to partial burning, where the disk is left
open so more can be added later. Could this be true in your case?
If it is convenient, you might take a dvd MINUS R blank disk back to your
friend's and try burning the data again.
If any of the machines are portable, try connecting one that reads the
disk to yours via FireWire, and booting one of the machines in FireWire
T-mode (while holding down the T key).
