Best Buy is selling a 300G Seagate external firewire drive for $200.
model ST3300601C

Seems almost too good to pass up. (best $/gigabyte ratio of anything I've
looked at.)
Yes or No?

I built my own 320GB for around $125. NewEgg and ComputerGeeks. Hard
drive was a Western Digital.

I have Western Digital drives that are a couple of years old running
just fine in my G4. The only new drive I've had fail on me is an IBM
(now Hitachi) laptop drive that died three weeks out of warranty. The
Seagate drive (5400RPM) I bought to replace that drive does a real
annoying pause when I'm typing in some programs, especially Apple's Mail.

I believe that drives from all manufacturers will vary from batch to
batch and model to model. Chances are that you'll get one that works.
Now, the external I built is off 99% of the time. I use it to backup
the two hard drives in my G4 desktop and the drive in my G3 laptop. As
long as they don't all fail at the same time, I'm good...

Something else to be aware of is warranty difference with retail
external vs build your own. The Seagate externals have a one year
warranty, period. A Seagate bare drive has a five year warranty. I
don't know what is typical for an enclosure only.
