What are the chances of a Smart and Friendly(tm) SCSI CD Burner (Model
CD-RW 226) working with OS 9.x? It came to me with an ISA SCSI card
(useless obviously), a SCSI cable with only one connector(!) and no
drivers. According to the CD section in TechRef (2002 edn), it has a 6x
read and 2x write speed, which doesn't bother me all that much.

William-

You have to try it to see. You may not be able to find Mac drivers for
the SCSI card, so using the Mac's SCSI bus is your best bet. Just be sure
the drive's SCSI address doesn't have a conflict with anything else in the
system. Also, SCSI isn't "plug-and-play" like USB is. Make connections
with power off, and turn on power to the CD drive when the Mac starts to
boot.

First try Apple System Profiler to see what the Mac thinks of the drive.
If it appears to be recognized, see if a CD shows up on the Mac desktop.

The Mac may not be able to burn a CD using its system software, but a
program like Toast is likely to be able to cope with it. I think you need
an older version of Toast to work with OS 9.

Yes, try Toast.

Alternately, you may try to look up that drive to see if others have
had similar experiences at www.xlr8yourmac.com

I got a hacked OS 9 extension that allowed me to burn an audio CD with
a non-apple CDRW drive. Later after getting Toast I was able to burn
both audio and data.

OK, thanx for the help. It's an internal drive, but I have some external
SCSI cases that I can probably wedge it into - or I can just switch out
the CD drive already in there - and I'll take it from there. I think I
have a copy of Toast on one of these boxes here...

OK

Or it might work just fine.

Years ago, I upgraded the internal CD-ROM drive of a Quadra 840av. I
needed to hack the system extension to get Mac OS (8.1) to recognize the
drive, but I can still boot a system CD, despite this.
