Post subject: 10.6 computer not showing up on network
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

I have a small network. Two Macs & two PCs. The PCs are running Win XP Pro.
One Mac is running 10.4 and the other is now running 10.6. It previously
had 10.5 on it but I just did a fresh install of 10.6 after replacing the
hard drive.

Previously all computers could see each other on the network & share files.
Now the 10.6 computer doesn't show up in any of the other computers "Network
Neighborhood" (Mac or PC) and none of the other computers show up on the
10.6 box.

All computers have working Internet connections and correct IP settings
All computers are part of the same "Workgroup"
File Sharing is turned on and folders are shared
All firewalls and AV software are disabled for testing
I can connect to the other computers (and they can connect to 10.6) using
smb - "connect to server" ...

Any ideas why this computer is invisible on the network in both directions?

Thanks

From a PC, do Start->Run (or WinKey-R) and do

\\192.168.7.2

(substituting whatever the Mac's ip is)

If that fails to connect, it's most likely a firewall issue. If it
does, it's just Windows being stupid or insufficient time has passed
for the name to get into the Master Browser for the subnet.

At the Mac Terminal, you can also use smb commands to see if IT sees
other machines. "smbtree" is a good start.

Hmm... I suppose it could be a problem with your router, or a problem
with the other computers having cached network information.

Have you tried logging out and back in on or restarting the non-10.6
machines?

Thanks for your post.

I *can* connect using UNC and SMB. The problem is that the 10.6 computer is
not showing up in Network neighborhood on the PCs or under Network Servers
on the other Mac.

Nothing is showing up under "Network Neighborhood" on the 10.6 machine.

I have rebooted all computers many times.

The bad machine is connected wirelessly as is one of the PC's that *is*
working, so it is not the router.

Cleared all network caches

Nothing is showing up in "Network Neighborhood" on the 10.6 machine
